Why a calling station changes 3-way pot strategy

In solver land, 3-way pots often look elegant and balanced. On a flop like Ts7h4s, BTN can raise a small c-bet from CO not only for value, but also because BB is forced to fold a surprisingly large chunk of the range. That extra fold equity is the engine behind many aggressive lines: even when BTN is not thrilled about bloating the pot against CO, the pressure on BB makes the raise attractive.

That logic becomes much less stable once BB is a calling station. Real players, especially in softer pools, do not always defend in the disciplined way a GTO model expects. They call wider, continue with dominated pairs, and refuse to give up draws that should theoretically be folded. For poker players, that matters a lot: the best solver line is not always the best exploitative line.

What the first experiment tried to answer

The original idea was straightforward: if BB becomes more sticky, does BTN still want to raise as often? The hypothesis was intuitive. If BTN’s raise works partly because BB makes big laydowns, then BTN should raise less frequently when BB is tougher to move off a hand.

That sounds simple, but experiments in poker rarely are. A clean test should change only one variable while leaving everything else constant. Here, though, changing BB’s continuing range also changes how CO reacts. Once CO knows BB is a calling station, their c-bet sizing may shift too. In other words, BTN is not reacting in a vacuum.

That does not make the test useless. It simply means the answer is about a slightly broader question than the one that sparked the investigation. Solvers are good at answering the question you ask them — the challenge is making sure you ask the right one.

What happened when BB was set to calling station

When a calling station profile was applied to BB, BTN did change its behavior. The most visible shift was that BTN called the c-bet less often and both folded and raised more often. On top of that, when BTN did choose aggression, the smaller raise size still showed up, but the 66% pot raise became much more common than in the GTO-BB version.

That said, there was an important complication. CO’s c-betting strategy also changed. In the original setup, CO mixed between 25% pot and 50% pot, leaning slightly toward the smaller size. With a calling station in BB, CO almost always bet 50% pot. That is a meaningful confounding factor because BTN’s response is now influenced by a different c-bet structure.

So the first run suggested that BTN becomes more aggressive, but it did not fully isolate the effect of BB being sticky. The signal was there, but it was not clean enough to treat as the final word.

A cleaner test with Single Size Solutions

To remove the sizing noise, the next step was to use Single Size Solutions. These make the comparison much easier because CO no longer splits between multiple c-bet sizes. CO still adapts to a calling station in BB, but the tree is cleaner and the output is easier to interpret.

Since a Player Profile cannot be applied directly in the Single Size framework, the workaround was to build a Custom Solution with the same betting options and node-lock BB to never fold top pair, open-ended straight draws, or any flush draw. That creates a much stickier BB and gives us a better look at BTN’s true exploitative adjustments.

CO still changes somewhat, betting 23% of range against a GTO BB and 31% against the calling station. But the range composition is nearly identical, and CO’s equity versus both ranges is the same. That makes it much more likely that BTN’s extra aggression is aimed directly at the loose BB, not at a side effect of CO’s new sizing.

What BTN is actually raising for

This is where the strategy gets interesting. Against a GTO BB, BTN often slowplays hands like 77 and 44, because there is value in keeping BB’s top pair in the pot. Once BB is node-locked to never fold top pair, those hands become better candidates for a raise, with one exception: the 77 combo that does not contain a spade is less attractive.

BTN also increases raises with AT, KT, and QT, while slightly reducing raises with JT. That may sound counterintuitive at first, but it makes sense once you look at what BTN is trying to accomplish.

That is a fantastic outcome for the raiser.

Against a calling station, though, that fold equity largely disappears. When BTN raises QT, for example, the hand is less about pushing out superior one-pair holdings and more about extracting value from a player who will continue too wide. In practice, that changes the logic of the raise. It is no longer primarily a pressure play; it becomes a thinner, more direct value play.

What this means for real poker players

The biggest takeaway is that solver output should never be copied blindly into soft-player environments. A line that depends on BB folding a meaningful part of the range can lose a lot of value when BB is sticky. At the same time, a calling station can make some hands more profitable as value raises, because the opponent continues with worse holdings more often than theory assumes.

The key point is not that BTN becomes looser for no reason. The point is that the source of EV changes. Against GTO opponents, some raises exist because of fold equity. Against calling stations, the same raises may survive because of raw value and because the opponent refuses to fold hands that should be out of the pot.

Final thoughts: exploit the station, but understand why it works

This study is a good reminder that poker strategy is not just about frequencies. It is about why those frequencies exist. When BB is too loose and too passive, BTN does not necessarily need to back off. In many spots, BTN can actually raise more often, especially when the raise captures thin value and punishes a player who over-calls.

But the logic changes. Against a GTO BB, many raises are powered by fold equity. Against a calling station, the same line is powered by the expectation of getting paid. That distinction matters enormously in 3-way pots, where one player’s tendency to call too much can reshape the entire decision tree.
